| Wychavon Youth Day report by Sam Parsons
On the 22nd of November, a group of musicians took part in a musical event at Evesham High School. The day was organised by the Wychavon society, and provided children of all abilities to play together, and the unique opportunity to play a newly composed piece of music by a budding young musician.
Firstly, the different sections of the band were put into groups, all of mixed ability. This allowed the younger players to play with more experienced players, and not only learn the new music but see how players who used to be at their level have developed into talented musicians.
These separate groups played and practiced the pieces, including High School Musical, Cool Cat Blues and a Grease Selection. This challenging but exciting selection of music provided a tough task, but the players stuck to the task diligently practicing throughout the day.
Lunchtime provided a tasty respite from practice, a delicious dinner provided by volunteers that duly filled up all of the players.
The musicians then joined together for a full run through of the pieces they had learnt, and the special music that they would play in the end performance was chosen. These pieces included Robbie William's “Let Me Entertain You”, a “Grease Selection”, “Pony Express”, and “March of the Celts”, a special piece composed by Rebecca Nottingham.
The piece had never been played before, and sounded spectacular when brought together. It took great skill and musicality to be able to compose for such a large number of players. Rebecca was awarded with a special prize from the Wychavon Group for her superb effort and skill.
After the performance, dignitaries from Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich were standing in ovation, and the band received a hearty applause from the audience, and even calls for an encore!
Overall, all players enjoyed a fun filled day of music, and were all rewarded for their efforts.
Special Thanks to Nicky Daw, the Wychavon Event organisers, and Rebecca Nottingham for her great piece!
